The Conciergerie: Go directly to jail
Welcome to the Conciergerie, one of the biggest medieval buildings in Paris in a prime riverside location. But this proud building that looks like it could be a great place to stay has a dark past… Palais de la Cité, the Capetian dynasty’s palace, the Gothic-style Conciergerie was once one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe. It became a state prison in 1310 and many lives were lost here, including Marie-Antoinette and Robespierre who spent time here before they were sent to the guillotine….

Next step: Saint Chapelle Chapel
A unique and fabulous chapel with a mystical yet beautiful past stands on Île de la Cité: Sainte Chapelle. It holds its own against Notre-Dame next door and deserves our full attention. Devote your time to the 13th century building that King Louis IX had built to house Christ’s relics. Experience his obsession with relics for yourself, from Constantinople and the Venetian canal sides to Paris itself… They are now part of the Notre-Dame treasure. Spend time soaking up some of the world’s best stained-glass windows in this gleaming haven… This Gothic masterpiece is a feast for the eyes with its intricate gold and colourful designs: the windows depict scenes from the history of the chosen people and Christ along the nave right up to the Apocalypse rose window.

Let’s travel through time as we leave Ile de la Cité: our step-by-step tour continues in a more baroque setting near Saint Julien le Pauvre Church deep in the Latin Quarter! Soak up this slice of the city with cute boutiques, art galleries and the oldest tree in Paris!
We’ll stop at Square René Viviani to meet the robinia tree that has stood the test of time and has been rooted in the Paris soil since 1601. Just imagine: it was here when the oldest bridge in Paris, Pont Neuf, was built! It bends but doesn’t break so duck under its leaves and enjoy your break.
