Your step by step tour in Montmartre,
on Amélie Poulain’s paths
Let’s start as we mean to go on in front of the Moulin Rouge and up Rue Lepic, the famous Napoleonic street from Place Blanche to La Butte. Van Gogh painted it, Yves Montand sang about it and Jean-Pierre Jeunet brought it to the big screen with the Café des Deux Moulins where Amélie works. This traditional café has an understated 50s interior and has become a rite of passage for any fan of the Oscar-winning film.
Next up is the Abbesses station and Wall of Love. The attraction in the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre is covered in declarations of love from all over the world in every language. Romance is right up our leading lady’s street so we simply can’t miss it!
Thirsty for more ?
Next step: Collignon deli – Au Marché de la Butte
Our next unmissable step is Maison Collignon and the shopkeeper’s knowing smile at Au Marché de La Butte. The hilarious scenes between Lucien, his mad boss and Amélie will instantly pop into your head! Afterwards, pick up a snack from Collignon and prepare to meet the holy trinity of Montmartre…
Next step: Le Moulin de la Galette
Montmartre is a unique neighbourhood, it’s a village in a capital. Don’t believe us? This is where you’ll find one of the last mills still standing out of 30 mills that once stood on La Butte Montmartre. Le Moulin de la Galette was turned into a bar in 1870 then a restaurant in 1980. It was a favourite haunt among artists and locals that Renoir immortalised in Bal du Moulin de la Galette and Amélie’s deep-thinking neighbour patiently copies in the film.
Next step: Le Lapin Agile
On the way to Le Lapin Agile, let us introduce you to Le Passe-Muraille, an amazing statue by Jean Marais in tribute to one of Montmartre’s most famous and loyal residents: Marcel Aymé.
Le Lapin Agile is the beating heart of Montmartre. It’s a cabaret and historical site that has been part of major upheavals and milestone events since the late 19th century. It was a boho go-to, left empty during the Great War and is now a place to relax, party and celebrate with song.
Now we just have to climb up to the Sacré Coeur, where Amélie asks her beloved to wait at the bottom by the merry-go-round.
Our step-by-step tour of Amélie’s Montmartre has surprises and sights galore with Place du Tertre ending our outing on a high. The End!
